Good movie not compromised by ridiculous PC restrictions
Some people say its slow but that is the style of the director and I didnt mind it, it mirrors nicely the events on the screen. Todays audience has a problem with focus, unable to keep their attention for more than a little while. Which is why ridiculous terrible movies like Transformers are so successful. Nothing but empty action. Classic movies like Rope or 12 Angry men would have no chance today. So saying this movie is slow is more of a problem with the viewer than the movie. Also nice to see a movie where the vision of the director is largely uncompromised by so many over the top restrictions that are often given by the studio nowadays. All in all I quite enjoyed it, its not a 10 and a few little mistakes bothered me a bit but they were small and unless really paying attention unnoticable. Worthwhile for a bit more intelligent viewer and one who isnt dependant with looking at their phone every minute and doesnt need constant distractions with their biggest fear being finding themselves in 30 seconds of silence where one might encounter their own thoughts.
A modern revision of 'Poliziotteschi' genre
S. Craig Zahler seems to really love 70/80s movies. He had directed very different genres: Western (Bone tomahawk), Prison films (Brawl in cell 99) and now italo-crime or 'Poliziotteschi' films with this movie (i.e. 'Cani arrabiati' of Mario Bava). All three movies share a lot, they start slow, they build the character little by little until an irreversible explosion of violence erupts. I liked this movie, not only because it has a solid acting, cinematography music and action scenes, i love how it evokes me the 80s movie vibe, when everything were simpler than today, it doesn't try to adopt the pseudo-documentary style to explain the character motivations or when it shows action or violence scenes. Its a production that is not for everyone, some people can argue that the characters are very archetypal, and its true, but i think that is totally intentional and it works quite nicely to incorporate what i think is the main message of the movie: sense of purpose. In this movie different characters question themselves about the purpose they have, are they doing something else than barely survive? what they need to do to achieve their goals if they have any?, it seems that the only characters that doesn't think twice are the bad guys, they act without remorse, they are blinded by their goals, and that's why someone also can complain about how plain and predictable they antagonists are, since in here they look like pure vehicles to show how having our goals over anything else in live will cost us humanity and transform us into monsters. Wrapping up, good movie, but the best is the bright future the director has and hopefully others will follow him, i like this type of action movie that doesn't follow the current trend of documentary-like action and script, sometimes I like to suspend my disbelief. I don't need explanations to everything, reality cannot be surpassed, so its better to create stories that wont fully fit in a newspaper, we are willing to fill the gaps.
Boring & Pointless
Nothing else needed to describe this film. The script was generic and slow. The character development was atrocious. The scenes were dull and unimaginative.
2.5 Hours of chit chats and boredom
This movie features chit chats, people sleeping, people sitting in cars, people playing videogames, people eating, people watching tv, people watching other people...for 2.5 hours. The sound crue should be shot at the town's square for their terrible job delivering murky blurry low volume incoherent sound and effects. Maybe they worked in silent movies before who knows.. Put the movie on, go fix dinner take a shower go out for a couple of drinks and when you come back the movie will still be running with two guys sitting in a car chatting about their crap lives. What a terrible movie. My expectations from modern cinema have been reduced to just try to not spend any money for any movie whatsoever no matter the theme or actors. I think by now the words Box Office should be a thing of the past. One day even complete morons will just stop paying to see any movie at the theaters. The entire story of this god forsaken ultra dragged movie could be completed in a 20 minutes film. Thats all it takes. 20 minutes to show 2 cops failing to highjack a robbery. Misleading poster and description of the movie. If the poster was just a plain blank piece of paper it would describe the movie more accurate. Go spend your money somewhere else. Anywhere. Go for a drive around the block for 2.5 hours. It would be more entairtaining than this film.
A complete borefest
Do not be fooled by the the reviews that say how good this is and that Mel Gibson is back with a bang .The exact opposite is true .Two and a half hours that could have been done in an hour .Most of the film is done when they could not afford the lighting bill .The script is dull and in someways done in a way to stretch the film out .The action scenes are few and far between .You have to wait till the last 20 minutes for any real action and the end is pretty predictable .Wish i had not believed the first few reviews .
